FRHS E-NEWS
I am not above groveling... PLEASE consider giving your time to this
much appreciated service to the school, parents and students.
Ideally my replacement will be a parent of a freshmen or sophomore.
He or she will bring a fresh perspective to the position. When I
took over the job my daughter had just finished her freshman year
and I essentially knew nothing about the high school and had a
minimal knowledge of how to send and read email. It was the
on-the-job training which helped me ask the needed questions and
share what I learned with the vast ranks of clueless parents just
like myself who were struggling to get a handle on the opportunities
for parents and students alike at the high school.
You will have the support of the PTO board and the school's
administration and Judy Polczynski has graciously offered to
continue forwarding all the announcements to whomever volunteers to
take on the job. And I will be around for another year. My son
doesn't graduate until next spring. Plus you will have five years of
sample newsletters for your reference. Don't forget you get to set
your own schedule. Send the news out when it is conveninient to you:
morning, afternoon or evening.
Once again I ask you to consider stepping forward. It is a great way
to help from the comfort of your own home and computer desk.

The Key Club is sponsoring a cereal
drive for the Murrysville Food Pantry. We will be collecting cereal and
cereal bars to pass out at the May Food Bank.
We would like students to bring donations to Mrs. Koury's room(234). She will track which 1st period class they are in. The class donating the most over 25 boxes will win a donuts for a morning of the teacher's choice. Here is where we need your help... This is a very worthwhile cause. Please encourage you child to participate. Donations from teachers will count toward the class total. The food bank clients live right here in the Murrysville/Delmont/Export area. Mrs. Koury works at the Food Bank most months and has seen a lot of former FR students who are now on their own. The Westmoreland food bank supplies the food to this area, but does not provide many products that these people would like to have like cereal, toothpaste, shampoo, etc. That's why you see frequent food drives from various organizations.
The leading first period classes will
be announced on the announcements. The drive will end May 1st.

Items for sale
and fundraisers...
(New or
updated items' titles are highlighted in blue)
Editor's note: I will run
fundraising announcements in the E-News about once a
week. If you are associated with a school related
organization and would like to advertise it in
the E-News please send me an article to
FRHSnews@windstream.net. I
have found the simpler the format the better. Often
when I copy more complicated items the original
formatting (fonts, spacing, colors, etc) doesn't
transfer well and I end up having to retype the
article. Please be sure to include a contact person
and an end date, so I know how long to run the
article.

It was brought to my attention that there were rumors spreading
through the school last week about the voting process for the
prom court. I looked into it to find out just what the actual
procedure involved.
The first step in the voting process is choosing the top 5
candidates (the Court) for each grade. The class sponsors get a
list of all the junior and senior girls and boys from the
counseling center and photocopy them as ballots. The list are
copied on color paper and counted by the sponsors to give each
homeroom teacher the proper number of ballots. The homeroom
teachers pass out the lists and students choose 5 girls and 5
boys from their class that they would like to see serve on the
prom court. The homeroom teacher immediately collect the ballots
and return them to the class sponsors. Because of the
pre-counted ballots it is not possible for students to vote more
than once or "stuff the ballot box".
The second step in the process is tallying the selections by
class. The members of the prom committee and the sponsors tally
the votes. Committee members who are juniors count the senior
ballots and likewise seniors on the committee count the junior
ballots. IF that isn't possible due to the make up of the
committee, then the boys count the girl ballots and the girls
count the boys ballots. The sponsors are present the entire time
during the ballot count.
The top 5 scorers in each grade are selected to serve on the
prom court. If there is a tie for 5th place there may be a 6th
member included. These students are then placed on a new
ballot. This ballot is a scantron form. The ballots are again
counted out by homeroom and distributed accordingly. The
homeroom teacher handout the ballots as before, collect them and
return them immediately to the sponsors. The sponsors then run
all of the scantron forms through the machine and get the final
winners. No members of the prom committee or any other students
are told the final outcome until the night of the prom.
I hope this shed some light on the matter and quells the rumors.
If you have any questions or comments about the voting process
the class sponsors welcome your input. You may contact either
Becky Magness (x5114) or Christine Trimnal (X5223).
Have a great day!
Anne Brendel
