MORNING ANNOUNCEMENTS
The "Panther News Break" - the high school's morning announcement show is now posted daily on the Franklin Regional Website. Go to: http://www.franklinregional.k12.pa.us/highschool/morningannouncements.asp
Click on the date to see the show for that day.

Today's announcements include: deadline for senior yearbook pictures, Class Ring sale, jump drive sale, Sophomore Class officer candidate applications, trip to Warhol Museum, health screenings, dancesport club, SAT registration deadline, scholarship opportunity for juniors, club meetings and college visits scheduled for this week.

I strongly recommend you add this site to your favorites and get in to the habit of checking it daily. That way you and your child can always be informed about what is happening at school.

SENIOR YEAR DUES - CLASS OF 2009
As explained in the letter sent home in August with the students' schedules the high school has adopted a new Senior Year Dues program. All monies previously submitted under the old Class Dues system have been transferred to your child's new Senior Year Dues (SYD) account and applied towards the $70 in SYD owed. Also included in that August mailing you should have received a half sheet of paper which was a statement showing how much you have paid to date and your remaining balance which is to be paid in full during the junior year.

This year's Junior Class sponsors are Mrs. Magness and Mrs. Trimnal. They have the old "Class Dues" records kept by the previous class sponsors during the Class of 2009's freshman and sophomore years. Any student who paid the old "Class Dues" ($20/year) in their freshman and sophomore year will now owe $30, while others who never sent in any "Class Dues" will owe the full $70 and those that paid one year's worth of dues will owe $50. If you have misplaced the statement with your child's remaining balance and you can't remember what you have already paid, you will need to contact one of the sponsors to get the current remaining balance.

To make your payment please:
Make checks payable to "CLASS OF 2009"
CHECKS ONLY - no cash, please!
Please be sure to write the Student's name in the Memo Line along with 2009
Place check in an envelope, seal it and write "Class of 2009 Senior Year Dues" and Attn Mrs. Magness on the front.
Parents or students may drop the payment off in the main, please be sure the envelope is placed in Mrs. Magness' mailbox.
Payments may also be mailed to the school, Attn. Mrs. Magness, Class of 2009 Senior Year Dues

BALFOUR CLASS RING ORDER PACKETS

A representative from the Balfour Company will be at FRHS in the front lobby during all lunch periods and during open house on Tuesday, September 25th.  He will be taking orders and collecting a $50 minimum deposit.  The sale is open to sophomores, juniors and seniors.  Packets were distributed to sophomores in their English classes. Juniors and seniors who are interested in purchasing a ring will need to pick up an order packet in the main office.

FYI - The main goal of this newsletter is to improve communication.  That includes informing parents that they have options when it comes to certain school related issues.  For instance, you have no choice when purchasing a yearbook, you either decide to buy the one provided through the school or you don't. There isn't an alternative yearbook that you could purchase elsewhere. But there are a few items where families do have options.  One such case is the class ring.  Not all families opt to purchase a ring... that is a personal decision... but for those of you who are considering buying one I wanted to pass along basic information I have gathered from other FRHS parents' experiences. I am not implying one option is better than another. I just believe the more informed a decision a family can make the better.

Balfour has a contract with the school and takes ring orders 2 times during the year; in the fall and in the early spring around March.  It takes about 3 months to get your ring.  You can make payments during those 3 months until they send you a notice of delivery (however payments are not required)  They do not provide payment slips or coupons, so you will need to keep track of your payments.  To the best of my knowledge, the notice for Class Ring Pickup, which states the balance due and pickup information, is delivered to the student in their first period class. Balance is due on delivery (do not mail in balance). Three methods of payment are accepted: cash, money order, or personal check.  As part of your purchase price you enroll in a replacement insurance program through which you can replace a lost or damaged ring for a set deductible payment. Based on parental feedback that I have received, people who ordered from Balfour were happy with quality of their child's ring and the selection of styles available.

Your primary alternative is going to an independent jeweler. Parents have stated this option provided very similar rings as Balfour including the choice of stones and designs to put on the ring. In most cases the delivery time was shorter.  With an independent jeweler you can order the ring anytime during the year and all grade levels are eligible to purchase a ring.  I am told the pricing is approximately the same or possibly cheaper than Balfour depending on what style of ring you choose. As with Balfour, you will be asked to put down a deposit (though the amount may be differ from $50) and you should ask about a replacement plan or warranty. The parents who purchased locally were pleased with quality of their child's ring and the selection of styles.

There are other jewelry outlets and sites on the internet as well, however I didn't get any personal recommendations from parents regarding either of these options.

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTIONS - PART TWO
PAWS for a Cause:
Our club was created to promote the prevention of cruelty to animals and initiate philanthropic events to benefit local humane no kill shelters.  Our members participate in several school events such as: the Bonfire, Holiday Telethon, and a spring donation drive.  We meet about twice a month after school for about a half hour in the Counseling Center (additional meetings may be called as needed).  This year we will be working closely with Pet Adoption League, a no kill shelter based in Yukon, PA.  All proceeds from the 2007 Bonfire will be donated to the P.A.L. shelter.  In addition, we will also ask our members to help with an upcoming Chinese Auction hosted by P.A.L.  The money donated will be used toward maintaining heat in the shelter as the winter months approach.

Anyone interested in joining, please stop by the Counseling Center and see either Mrs. Zachetti or Mrs. McCann for more information. All students are welcome!

Westmoreland Interscholastic Reading Competition (WIRC)
The competition is open to all students who enjoy reading. The inter-team practices at school are almost as much fun as the competition against other high school at Seton Hill.

Creative Writing/Fantasy Club
The club discusses upcoming fantasy books, movies, and events. It is an opportunity to be creative, have fun, make new friends, and explore all the latest in the fantasy and the science-fiction worlds.
(Club Officers)
The meets every Tuesday after school in the library.

Mock Trial
The Mock Trial team competes in the Pennsylvania Mock Trial Competition and in the University of Pittsburgh High School Mock Trial Invitational Competition. It's a great activity for students who enjoy grappling with complicated factual  situations or debating issues about which they feel strongly. Requires lots of work and commitment...but it's worth it!

Rube Goldberg Machine Team
The Rube Goldberg Machine contest is a spirited competition for 11th and 12th graders. The contest fosters an interest in engineering by challenging students to create a machine that will accomplish a specific task using a series of convoluted steps. (Think of the Mouse Trap Game). Physics is a prerequisite. This activity runs from September to December and meets multiple times a week, especially as the competition nears.

Caring Team
The Caring Team raises money throughout the year to provide funds for kids in our area that need medical insurance, counseling after losing a loved one, and aid in acquiring immunizations.  Every dollar that they raise is matched by Blue Cross/Blue Shield and all administration costs of Blue Cross/Blue Shield are free. The Powderpuff game (senior girls vs. junior girls) held in the spring is their biggest fundraiser.

PEER TUTORING
The Counseling Center is looking for dedicated students who are willing to provide tutoring assistance for peers.  Tutors will receive documented volunteer hours for helping out. If a student was a peer tutor last year, or is interested in becoming a new tutor, he or she should see Mr. McClure in the Counseling Center by September 14th.
(ASB, based on morning announcement submitted by Mr. McClure, 8/30-9/14)
