COUNSELING CENTER NEWS ON THE WEB
The Counseling Center is
now on the web! Notices are posted on:
Counseling Center update...
MEETING WITH STUDENTS
Counselors are currently
working with seniors on post-secondary applications. They are meeting with
each senior one-to-one to devise an action plan for the application process,
including deadline dates. Small group freshmen introductions to the
Counseling Center were conducted in early October, with individual freshman
meetings to follow. In January 2008, counselors will begin working with
juniors on the post-secondary planning process. Sophomores are also seen
during the second semester.
Newsletters....
SENIORS
The
Senior Newsletter distributed by the Counseling Center
was handed out to all seniors early in September. The newsletter
contains information about the SATs, scholarships, the WSC college fair,
voter registration and college applications tips. Please note that
"official" transcripts (signed and school-sealed) can only be mailed
directly from the counseling office to colleges. The Counseling Center
will gladly give you unofficial transcripts for your use.
If your
senior hasn't shared the newsletter with you yet be sure to ask about
it. If he or she denies all knowledge of such a document, extras are
available in the Counseling Center and hopefully will be available on
the school webpage. I recommend you file the newsletter with other
important papers pertaining to the college search process. The tips it
contains will come in handy as the fall progresses and your son or
daughter is completing their applications.

JUNIORS
The Counseling Center's Junior Newsletter was
handed out to all juniors in their English classes last week.
The newsletter primarily focuses on the PSAT, why a student
should take it, how to register for the test and what to bring
on the day of the test (October 20, 2007). It also gives
information about the Discover Card scholarship program. If your
junior hasn't shared the newsletter with you, be sure to ask
about it. Extra copies are available in the Counseling Center
and hopefully it will be available on the school webpage in the
near future.
(ASB)
SOPHOMORES
Sophomores will receive their newsletter in their
English classes by the end of this week. It mainly
contains information regarding the PSAT. Sophomores who
have completed geometry are eligible to take the test.
The scores do not count this year and taking the test
is considered a practice exercise.

Test information...
PSSA TEST DATES
October 22 - November 2: Seniors retest for
Math, Reading and Writing
February 11 - 22: Juniors writing assessment
March 31 - April 11: Juniors math and reading
assessment
April 28 - May 9: Juniors science assessment
FYI - The state dictates when the PSSA
tests will be given by providing districts with a testing
window (given above) within which they must administer the
PSSA. Each individual district may select the days that work
best for them within that window. At this time Franklin
Regional has not fixed their dates, but at least the
information above will let you know what days to avoid when
planning family trips.

SAT TEST SCHEDULE FOR
2007-2008
SAT REGISTRATION
The upcoming test is November 3rd. The regular registration
deadline for this test date has passed, but the last
registration deadline is October 11th. Go to
www.collegeboard.com for more information and to
register. Note that Franklin is not a test site for the
November test.
Franklin Regional's School Code is 392835 and test center
number is 39-450.
IMPORTANT
CELL PHONE NOTICE FOR SAT TEST TAKERS
To all students taking the SAT: LEAVE
your cell phones at HOME or in the CAR. The College
Board has announced a new rule that anyone caught
with a cell phone in the testing center (or whose
phone rings) will be dismissed from the center and
the test scores will be cancelled!
PSAT REGISTRATION
Juniors who intend to take the PSAT here at FR on October
20th should stop in the Counseling Center before
October 12th and print their name on the
sign-up sheet. Payment ($18) is due in CASH the day of the
test. Students who sign up should pick up a copy of the PSAT
Student Bulletin which contains a sample test and additional
important information. It is strongly advised that students
practice before the actual PSAT by completing the sample
test. On the morning of the test students are to report to
the high school between 7:30 and 7:45. The test will end
approximately at 11:00.
(ASB)
FYI - Juniors have first priority
taking the PSAT. Only sophomores who have completed
Geometry are eligible to sign up for the PSAT. It is
considered a practice exercise in the sophomore year.

ACT TEST
REGISTRATION
The upcoming test is October 27, 2007. The
registration deadline has passed. The next test date
is December 8th. Go to
www.actstudent.org for more information and to
register. (You will need a credit card.)
The ACT test is an alternative
to the SAT. As opposed to the 3 scores on the SAT,
students receive 5 scores on the ACT: English, Math,
Reading, Science Reasoning and a composite score.
(There is an optional writing section as well.) Most
colleges will accept either the SAT or ACT. For
students who take both tests, colleges will
generally use whichever score best benefits the
student. Additionally, some school that require SAT
subject tests will accept the ACT as a replacement.
Check with your intended colleges for their policy
with regards to the ACT.
Franklin Regional is not a
test site for the ACT, however neighboring school
districts such as Penn Hills have testing dates. The
test is also administered at the University of
Pittsburgh. Check the ACT website (www.actstudent.org)
for test locations and dates.

COLLEGE VISITS
TO FRHS
Throughout
the year representatives from various schools visit FRHS to
talk to students. These visits are a wonderful opportunity
for students to hear about colleges or universities. It may
spark an interest in a school that they were only remotely
considering or it may eliminate a school from their list and
save you a trip. In any case, it is an opportunity for them
to hear from an actual school representative (vs. internet
tours or rating guide books) and to ask questions. College
visits are open to seniors and juniors. The Counseling
Center asks that a student have a study-hall the period of a
scheduled visit or, if a student will be missing a class,
that he or she make sure it is OKAY with their teacher FIRST
before attending the college visit session. Also students
must get a "College Visit Pass" from Mrs. Smart in the
Counseling Center PRIOR to attending a college visit.
Visits will be posted on the Counseling Corner on the
school's web page throughout the year. In addition there is
a "College Visit" Calendar in the Counseling Center that
students can stop in and check regularly.
