November 19, 2007

I am finally back in business!  I am sorry for the break in the news, but I was away longer than I anticipated.  I hope everyone kept up to date by using the school's web site now with Morning Announcements and Counseling Center news.

As is to be expected, today's newsletter is rather long. Please take your time as you scroll down. There just might be something of interest to you or your child.

I expect many of the upcoming newsletters will be packed with interesting and exciting news. We are getting into a very busy time of year not only in everyone's personal lives, but at the school too. Looking ahead I can name a few scheduled events: the Holiday Telethon and all of it's associated activities, a Black and White Sadie Hawkins Dance (new this year), and preparations for the Martin Luther King celebration - "Let Freedom Sing" in January.

DANCE ANNOUNCED
All the rumors you've heard from the kids are now officially true. Everyone had such a great time at Homecoming that the students decided they would like another dance between Homecoming and the Snowflake Dance in February.
The organizers have received the go ahead. There will be a dance Saturday December 15th and it will be held at the Middle School gym (the high school was
not available for this date). The times are 6:30 until 10PM. Tickets will be $5 a person and will go sell starting December 3rd.

The dance is being sponsored by the Italian Club and is a Black and White dance (attendees have to wear Black and White or will not be admitted)
It addition it will follow the Sadie Hawkins format, so the girls will be asking the guys. However, a student does NOT have to have a date to attend. The dress will be semi-formal similar to the Homecoming Dance.

JUNIOR PHYSICAL REMINDER
Please turn in the mandatory 11th grade physical form to the Nurse as soon as possible.
(Mrs. Pianetti)

PAPER PRODUCT COLLECTION DRIVE

The Life Skills Class at the high school will be collecting donations of paper products from students, families and staff members.
Please drop off your donations in the main office or room 126 by the end of November.

SPRING MUSICAL

MARTIN LUTHER KING CELEBRATION PLANNED FOR JANUARY
Urban and suburban choral ensembles will join forces to present "Let Freedom Sing" in Murrysville on January 21, 2008 in celebration of the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Proceeds from the concerts will benefit the "Build the Dream" project to construct the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, DC.

In keeping with Dr. King's philosophy and beliefs, this event will celebrate "community & diversity" when suburbs and city neighborhoods come together as one community in an evening of musical celebration, narration, and tribute.

Nationally recognized performing artist Vanessa German will narrate the event. The concert will be conducted by Rev. Dr. Herbert Jones, national officer of the Gospel Music Workshop of America. Collaborating with Dr. Jones in organizing the concert event is Kris Rust, director of choirs at Franklin Regional High School.

The FRHS Choruses will host six predominantly African American choirs from Penn Hills, Beaver Falls and inner city Pittsburgh. There will be over 300 performers involved in the concert!  Through music and oratory, we will demonstrate unity and reveal that we are all truly part of a larger, more inclusive community.

Each invited group will perform individually in the first half of the concert, and will come together as one chorus in the second half to perform three selections, accompanied by string orchestra and the GMWA instrumental ensemble.

Editor's note: I will run fundraising announcements in the E-News about once a week. If you are associated with a school related organization and would like to advertise it in the E-News please send me an article to FRHSnews@windstream.net. I have found the simpler the format the better. Often when I copy more complicated items the original formatting (fonts, spacing, colors, etc) doesn't transfer well and I end up having to retype the article. Please be sure to include a contact person and an end date, so I know how long to run the article.
