MURRYSVILLE COMMUNITY LIBRARY
As some
of you may know from reading the articles in the local newspapers the
library is converting to a new operating system. During the
transition some restrictions will have to be in place until the new
system is fully installed.
Attention students: From December 10-18 anyone wishing
to check out materials from the library MUST have their library card. No
NEW library cards will be issued during this time. So if you know you
have a research project or paper coming that will require you to use the
community library resources please be sure to remember to bring your
library card.

FYI - If you would
like to learn more about the changes taking place at the library I have
included, at the end of today's newsletter, the library's recent press
release which explains in detail the new program and the interim

SOPHOMORE CLASS TRIP
The sophomore
class is planning a class trip to Seven Springs for snow tubing. The
trip will take place on Friday, February 8th with a
back-up date of February 22nd in case of inclement weather. The
tickets for the trip will be $17 per student. The cost includes

PM. The plan is to be at Seven Springs for the 6-8 PM snow tubing
session. Students will be expected to meet at the designated area at

notified by their child that things are running behind schedule,
parents should plan to be at the high school to pick up students at

SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY
Career Fair for High School Students & Adults
The Southwestern Pennsylvania Workforce
Development Committee for Highway and Bridge Design, Construction &
Maintenance has scheduled a Career Day/Job Fair for Tuesday, December 11,
2007. The event will be held at the Western Area Career and Technology
Center in Central Washington County about 3 miles west of I-79 on Route 519
north.
High school students in 9th through 12th grades from the 7 county region of Southwestern Pennsylvania (Allegheny, Beaver, Fayette, Greene, Lawrence, Washington, and Westmoreland Counties) are being invited to attend during the day. The session for the high school students will start at 9:30 AM and end at approximately 1:30 PM with a short break for lunch. Adults including displaced workers, young adults and incumbent workers from the region are being scheduled to attend a late afternoon session. The session for adults will run from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Exhibitors will include representatives from colleges & universities, technical schools, the construction trades (Laborers, Operators, Carpenters, and Cement Masons), contractors, consulting engineering firms, transportation agencies (PennDOT, Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission), mentoring groups, and more. Essentially, all aspects of highway and bridge design, construction, and maintenance will be presented. A number of studies have predicted a significant worker shortage in both the public and private sectors of the highway and bridge engineering, construction, and maintenance fields with a very significant deficit in the number of minority and female workers. Therefore, women and minorities are strongly urged to attend. Participants will learn about the wide variety of opportunities currently available in the construction industry and what is involved in each discipline from engineering and design through construction and maintenance. Depending on their area of interest, participants will learn about furthering their education or what training they will need to meet the needs of the industry or possibly what they can do to find a job in the industry today. For the high school students, there will be hands on activities involving heavy equipment, carpentry, bricklaying, etc. Information on becoming employed by each of the trades will be available Demonstrations and information will be available for those interested in going on to technical schools for surveying, construction inspection, materials inspection, etc. And there will be information on what all may be involved in earning a degree in civil engineering or related fields. If you have any questions or want to participate, please contact Dr. Bill Adams at 412/429-4919.

Editor's note:
I will run fundraising announcements
in the E-News about once a week. If
you are associated with a school
related organization and would like
to advertise it in the E-News please
send me an article to
FRHSnews@windstream.net. I have
found the simpler the format the
better. Often when I copy more
complicated items the original
formatting (fonts, spacing, colors,
etc) doesn't transfer well and I end
up having to retype the article.
Please be sure to include a contact
person and an end date, so I know
how long to run the article.

Murrysville Community Library Joins the Westmoreland
Information Network
After several years of planning, 20 libraries in Westmoreland County are joining together to form the Westmoreland Information Network (WIN). The consortium will provide access to over 900,000 items through a state-of-the art, integrated library automation system. Funding for this project came from the Richard King Mellon Foundation, the Community Foundation of Westmoreland County Now and Forever fund and a Library Services and Technology grant from Commonwealth Libraries and the PA Department of Education. The WIN system will be up and running on Tuesday, December 18th. At that time library users can re-register for the new county-wide library card. This new card will allow users to access the library catalog online and maintain a patron account of their library activity. The Library will stay open during the transition over to the new system, but service will be limited. Between Monday, December 10 and December 18 the library will not be able to register new patrons, renew materials or place reserve requests on specific titles. All users will need to show their card to the library if intending to borrow materials. The Library will not be charging fines for any overdue material returned in December. This "amnesty" does not apply to any existing delinquent fees. Several changes will go in effect after the WIN system is in place. Library users will be able to borrow an unlimited number of items. Currently users are limited to only 10 items per card. The lending time will be a standard 2-week period for most items. Users will be able to renew items up to 4 times and renewals can be made in person, by phone or online. Library overdue charges are also changing. All adult items returned late will be charged a $.25/day late fee; items borrowed from the children's collection will be charged $.10/day. These charges will be effective beginning January 1, 2008. A bookdrop outside the library's main door is available for our patron's convenience.
(Murrysville Community Library Press Release)
Have a great day!
