SOCCER ALL-SECTION TEAM
The soccer boosters, parents, coaches and the Franklin Regional community would like to congratulate Brian Bodnar and Austin Laird on their selection to the WPIAL Class AAA  All-Section Team and to Mike Sekhon for honorable mention. These players were selected by section coaches for their outstanding play throughout the 2005 high school season.

CALCUSOLVE COMPETITION
Congratulations to our FRHS  kids and math teachers!  They won first place team, second place team, and fourth place team in the Calcusolve Competition.  Also, Vikram Raghu was the highest scoring individual, Rafee Memon and Rishi Mohnot tied for fourth place individual, and Hari Seshadri was the fifth place individual!

MURRYSVILLE RECREATION PROGRAMS
The department offers many programs for a variety of ages including programs for youth and teens, snowman contest for ages 4 through 13, two programs for children with special needs, recreational swim, health fair for the whole family, day and evening exercise classes for adults. More information is available and registration for most programs can be done on-line at www.murrysvillegov.org or at the municipal building. All Franklin Regional residents pay the same fee.  Call 724-327-2100, x 131 or 115 with any questions.

I have included at the bottom of the newsletter a listing of the classes offered. Also I was a copy of the agenda for the Health Fair on Saturday, January 14th. There are multiple speakers lined up with topics including Pain Management, Addiction, Depression, Time Management, and Medicine in the 21st Century. In addition there will be numerous screenings  and assessments available. “Drumming Experiences with Jim Donovan of Rusted Root” on Friday, February 24  
Pizza party included for both sessions.
Location: Murrysville Community Center, 3091 Carson Street
Jim’s relaxed and humor infused style of teaching is non-intimidating and all-inclusive. Drums are provided or you may bring your own. No experience required.
This is completely hands-on /interactive program. 
Jim Donovan is a current and founding member of the multi-platinum band Rusted Root. Jim has released 3 solo CDs as well as 4 instructional drumming CDs. Fulfilling his desire to share the power of rhythm first hand to people, Jim has built a series of drumming workshops that he teaches across the U.S. at universities, festivals, schools, corporations, and specialty venues. He is an adjunct faculty member at Saint Francis University and is the current director of percussion at the New York Institute of Dance and Education. Jim is a featured columnist in Drum! Magazine, the world’s number one drumming magazine. Jim was nominated for “Best Rock Pop Percussionist” in the 2004 Drum! Magazine Readers poll.
 
Session A – “Kids Jam! Youth Drumming Rhythm and Drumming Work shop

Kids will be immersed in a fully interactive music experience with this internationally acclaimed teacher/ performer. This highly charged event is a deeply positive and memorable experience in team building while making music in a non-competitive atmosphere.

Session B - “Rhythmic Motivation”
for ages 13 through adult                 7:30 – 9 pm
Beginners welcome. Get your groove on. Become immersed in an evening of drumming ecstasy. This highly charged event is intended to give you personal growth tools to last a lifetime. In this program Jim guides the participants through a series of steps designed to help each person learn more about themselves through the ancient art of hand drumming.

Fencing is one of the oldest, modern sports.  It teaches you to think on your feet, enhances your agility, balance and reflexes and improves your cardiovascular system.  It’s fun, safe and exciting. Equipment is available; however, note on registration if you are bringing your own equipment. “Color My World”
for grades 6 - 12

Tuesdays, February 14, 21, 28 (3 weeks)     6 – 8:30 pm                    
Using canvas, acrylic paints, paint markers, stencils, photo references and a creative mind, the artists will create one complete work of art that is a personal expression of the artist.  The students will learn the elements of color theory, repetition, lettering structure, background and how to carry a theme from thumbnails to finished product.  There are no limits on creativity with this class. The artist may choose to go extremely abstract or paint a still life! Instructor: Chris Moran, graphic designer muralist

“CSI – Crime Scene Investigation”
for grades 5 - 12

Help solve a crime!!! Utilize techniques used by modern police forces. A day of fun and learning. Instructor: Sergeant Charles Tappe, special training in accident reconstruction, on-scene accident investigation, sobriety testing, auto theft training, hostage negotiation and crime prevention. “Driver Theory Education Program”  
for ages 15 and up.

Getting ready to get your license or just got it?  is important to be a responsible, defensive driver and to know PA regulations.  Class instruction uses a variety of techniques to train drivers to adjust to today's driving situations.  Student will be issued a "driver education certificate" which is acceptable for insurance discounts at the completion of the course. “Discover Scuba”
for ages 8 and up

Experience the underwater world at this non-committal one-day class.  Learn how to breathe underwater, then explore the bottom of the pool - it is that easy!  This course experience can be used as a credit towards gaining an Open Water Certification.  All equipment provided.  Instructor: Barbara Haybarger, Franklin Regional Physical Education Instructor and certified scuba instructor with Underwater Adventures and Ocean Odyssey Dive Center.
 
“Discover Snorkeling”

“Open Water Scuba”
for ages 10 and up

"Open Water Scuba...pool and academic experience" - Ready to join the underwater world?  With this course learn the academics and water skills to become an open water scuba diver.  Learn the water techniques and skills; study the academics at home to prepare for your test.  Once you have completed this course work, you will then be ready to enroll in the necessary four open water dives (at an extra cost) to gain your scuba certification. Each participant will supply his/her own quality mask, fins and snorkel. Tanks ,regulators and BCD's  will be supplied. After registering, registrants must call Barbara at 724-327-5456 x 2524 to arrange to receive academic materials before the class begins. Instructor: Barbara Haybarger, Franklin Regional Physical Education Instructor and certified scuba instructor with Underwater Adventures and Ocean Odyssey Dive Center.
