Jane S. Kerr
I graduated from Washington and
Jefferson College in 1980 with B.A. in English and a Secondary
Education certification. For the next few years as my family grew, I
worked as a substitute teacher. After my youngest was born, I
returned to school and received my M. Ed. in Human Growth and
Development from the University of Maryland in 1990. I then taught
courses in psychology and in education at Westmoreland County
Community College and at St. Vincent College. Once my youngest was
in school, I returned once again to school to work on my Ph.D. at
the University of Pittsburgh.
Through my education and my
teaching experience, I knew that I could supplement my children’s
school work so they could learn even more. Therefore, when they were
young, I gave them "mom homework,” even in the summer! As a college
instructor, I was fortunate to have access to excellent educational
materials for my children to use.
In 1997 when my oldest began high
school, his "mom homework" logically focused on SAT
preparation. However, I found that effective materials were not easy
to find. So I used my knowledge of adolescent development and my
training in standardized tests to develop an individualized
course of study for him. A neighbor heard about what I had developed
and sent her daughter to my house for private tutoring. Both
students did very well on the test, and word of their successes
spread.
As more parents asked me to tutor
their sons and daughters, my company grew. I now work with other
dedicated tutors who share my philosophy of providing personalized
instruction in a reassuring atmosphere for motivated students who
want to improve their test scores.
We would love the privilege of working with
your son or daughter!
