PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test

  • A shorter version of the SAT (about 2 hours long)

  • Usually taken in October of sophomore and/or junior year

  • Not used for college admission, but good practice for the SAT

  • Used for some scholarships

SAT Reasoning Test

  • About 4 hours long

  • Offered 7 times a year

  • Can be taken multiple times

  • Includes Writing, Reading, and Math Sections

  • Used for college admission decisions by most colleges

ACT or ACT Plus Writing

  • About 3 1/2 hours long (4 hours with essay)

  • Offered 6 times a year

  • Can be taken multiple times

  • Includes English, Math, Reading, and Science Sections

  • Used for college admission decisions by most colleges

A student may take both the SAT and ACT and use the better score on college applications.
